Lean Healthcare Europe rests on extensive experience from the Danish health sector and can help any health organisation implement lean health. The programme is based on the Toyota Production System (TPS) adapted to the health sector, and the tools primarily used are Value Stream Maps and A3 problem solution. For a number of years the programme has achieved excellent results in the USA and was launched in Europe, including Denmark, in November 2006.
The teaching programme is based on the results from a research project financed by the National Science Foundation (2001-2004) and carried out by Cindy Jimmerson, Lean Healthcare West, and Durward Sobek, Montana State University.
By acquiring knowledge of the use of lean tools as these are being used on selected challenges, participants will develop good abilities to see possibilities for minimising waste, for making procedures more efficient by saving time and resources as well as for reducing the risk of errors.

Lean tools are simple to learn, but to achieve great gains from lean managers and staff must have a high degree of adaptability to change.
The lean programme is focusing on learning and embeddedness, so that the activities launched lead to more efficient procedures, more value for patients and improved staff satisfaction. Over time, the organisation will have trained its own lean instructors, thus ensuring that the good lean work can continue in future.
