Linguistic and cultural integration of foreign labour

The health services as we know them are breaking up. This also applies to the way our hospitals are structured and organised and the way health tasks are solved. To highlight this development, communications agency Waterfront Communications A/S held the hospital conference “Hospital of the future” on Tuesday 8 April 2008 in Holstebro, where Antje Rösch from Ad Hoc Translatørservice A/S was one of the speakers. Antje Rösch explained how hospitals in cooperation with the regions can strengthen the dialogue between Danish doctors and patients of non-Danish ancestry and the integration of doctors and other health care staff from countries outside the EU and Scandinavia.

- Hospitals need to have a clear integration process when they receive foreign doctors. In addition to intense language training, it is important that the hospitals work to integrate the doctors and their families in Danish society and association activities. These efforts allow them to get to know the Danes, the Danish language and Danish values. We need to adopt a panoptic approach to foreign doctors and their families and strengthen all the parameters that may contribute to strengthening patient care, explains Antje Rösch.

Other themes discussed at the conference included “Form and interior design – the impact of building architecture and aesthetics on patient and staff well-being”, “How do we ensure that customers are remembered when formulating the visions for the health services of the future?” and “International experience in public/private cooperation in the hospital sector”.
